The hysterosalpingogram, which is otherwise known as HSG, is the primary screening tool that we have for evaluating a woman’s uterus and fallopian tubes. It is an outpatient procedure. It is done in our office. It only takes about 5 to 10 minutes to do. It is very short procedure and basically what we do is we place fluid into the uterine cavity through a small catheter placed in the cervical canal and through that catheter we instill fluid through the uterus and through the fallopian tubes to assure that the tubes in the uterus are normal. We do an x-ray to make sure that there is patency and at that point, we can determine are the tubes opened or closed, and if for some reason we see that there is obstruction, in some certain situations, we can do a special catheterization procedure where we can place a small catheter through the fallopian tube and unblock any blockage that might be hindering the patient from getting pregnant.
