Diagnostic Testing Q & A

What is diagnostic testing?

Diagnostic testing helps the CARE Fertility providers determine what’s causing your infertility.

The team offers a full range of on-site diagnostic fertility tests for convenient, rapid results. Since 40% of infertile couples have problems because of male factor infertility, diagnostic testing covers both men and women.

What diagnostic testing might men need?

The range of tests for male infertility available at CARE Fertility includes:

Semen analysis

The team uses cutting-edge computer-assisted semen analysis (CASA) to accurately estimate sperm quantity and quality. CASA is one of the most advanced diagnostic tools available for testing male infertility. It’s far more precise than the manual analysis methods used by commercial labs.

The team uses CASA to study recorded video images of your sperm through a powerful microscope. A high-speed computer system digitizes and analyzes the images to assess sperm motility (how well they move), including the speed and straightness of movement.

Sperm DNA fragmentation testing

All men have some DNA fragments and whole DNA strands in their sperm. This is normal, but above a certain level, fragmentation means sperm is less likely to create a healthy embryo. Sperm DNA fragmentation reduces fertility and increases a woman’s risk of miscarriage.

What diagnostic testing might women need?

CARE Fertility offers key hormonal tests for women, including:

  • Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) to measure a woman’s egg reserve
  • Estradiol (estrogen) to monitor fertility medication responses during IVF
  • Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) to confirm pregnancy
  • Progesterone to assess ovulation

The CARE Fertility team uses the state-of-the-art Roche Diagnostics system for all hormonal testing. They can obtain results 1-2 hours after you provide a blood sample.

You could require multiple tests; other diagnostic testing you may need includes:

Ultrasound

Digital 3D and 4D ultrasounds are available in every exam room at CARE Fertility. An ultrasound uses sound waves to generate an image (sonogram) of your uterus and ovaries.

A transvaginal pelvic sonogram is an important initial diagnostic test. It helps your doctor at CARE Fertility to detect problems with the anatomy or structure of your uterus. Sonograms also measure a woman’s egg reserve to monitor the effectiveness of fertility drugs and to monitor early pregnancy.

Hysterosalpingogram (HSG)

HSG is the most common study for evaluating female pelvic abnormalities. The test involves injecting dye through your cervix under fluoroscopic (moving X-ray) monitoring. HSG is the gold standard for checking fallopian tube openness.

Hysteroscopy

Hysteroscopy is the most accurate way to see if there are any problems in your uterus. This procedure uses an instrument fitted with a light and camera that passes through the cervix into your uterus.

Both men and women might require tests for levels of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and testosterone.

CARE Fertility performs all of its diagnostic testing on-site. This is far more convenient than traveling elsewhere for your fertility tests, and you get your results very quickly.
